Introduction

International conference on "ISLAMIC VALUES IN A CHANGING WORLD" is the third international conference organized by the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Pattani, as an extension of the two previous international conferences i.e. "The Role of Islamic Studies in the Globalized Society 2010", and "Islamic Studies in a Changing World: Challenges and Opportunities 2013". This third Conference is the product of the 1st Islamic Studies Coordinating Meeting held in Bangkok on November 23, 2013 which showcased the importance of Islamic values to redirect intellectual perceptions and behavioral patterns for individuals and communities; and to establish the meaning of understanding among people and civilizations under the umbrella of a changing world.

The Conference is organized to necessitate the discussions on topics related to concept of Islamic values and to scrutinize the experiences of different communities, Muslim or non-Muslim, in practicing and promoting these values. It is hoped that educational institutions and intellectuals in their collective actions and mechanisms will promote the above-mentioned values. As a result, sustainable peace and harmony in communities are emphasized and shared. The Conference will be an avenue to also explicate culture of the exchange of views on peaceful coexistence among different communities, in addition to extensive caring for jurisprudence of balance, excellence and moderation in a changing world; and minority rights in human societies. All these collectively call for fruitful cooperation and serious vigilance among governments, educational institutions, intellectuals, charitable organizations, educationists, scientists and thinkers.

Conference Objectives

1. To highlight the landmarks of Islamic values and the approaches to apply these values in guiding people to a meaningful peace and harmony.
2. To identify shared moral values of various human civilizations and promote these values for the benefits of mankind.
3. To critically examine characteristics of balance, excellence and moderation and their role and to elucidate dialogues for achievable security and sustainable peace in communities.
4. To interpret minority rights in pluralistic societies and correct stereotypic aspects of coexistence experienced by the people in different countries across the globe.

Conference Themes

Axis I: Fundamentals of Islamic values and their applications

• Concept, objectives, and dimensions of Islamic values.
• Practical steps to promote Islamic values through educational institutions, media, intellectual discourse, among others.
• Barriers in applying Islamic values in a changing world, with proposed solutions from practical experiences of various communities and countries.

Axis II: Civilizations’ Shared Moral Values

• Models of moral values in Islamic civilizations and their impact on mutual understanding among various civilizations.
• Shared commonalities between the Islamic and other moral value systems within various human civilizations.
• Practical experiences to activate moral values in contemporary challenges facing communal moral values .


Axis III: Balance, Excellence and Moderation in a Changing World

• The concepts of balance, excellence and moderation in Qur’anic and Sunnaic texts and the interpretation of these concepts in Islam.
• Mechanisms and practical steps to make the concepts of balance, excellence and moderation a reality in a changing world.

Axis IV: Culture of Dialogue among Human Societies

• Dialogue: its features, legitimacy and types via Islamic studies.
• Objectives, purposes and aims of dialogue in Islam.
• Civilizational dialogues in the spirit of flexibility, tolerance and mutual respect in order to achieve security and peace.


Axis V: Human Societies and Minority Rights

• Landmarks of human rights through Islamic Studies.
• Religious plurality, justice principles, rights of freedom of expression by a minority community in a changing world.
• Corrective stereotypic aspects of human relations to enjoy coexistence among minority communities.

Conference Method

The conference is discussion sessions where research papers deal with the various themes of the conference. Chairman of Meeting or his deputy select discussants to comment on the mentioned discussed themes. Likewise, attendees are provided opportunity to contribute their views, inputs and comments.
Finally, CIS Scientific Committee will call for papers requesting scientists, researchers, scholars and educationists to submit their research papers in the framework of the axes defined above, and to kindly type approximately 300 worded preliminary abstracts on the topics intended to be presented at the conference.
